nothing happens in the absence of repetition is an ongoing series centered around quotes from press releases, exhibition texts, and articles for shows I attended or positions that informed my practice over the course of my master’s degree. It is part of my research on how the necessity of (self)branding under platform capitalism is accelerating the standardization of self-presentation, and how this manifests in the arts. The quotes were selected based on their ability to describe my overall practice or a particular work of mine. Through this selection, I probe a double bind: the expectation of an artist’s indisputable originality and the need to locate themselves within a legible lineage.
